Season 4:  No Surrender, No Retreat

Episode 67:  "The Hour of the Wolf"

Having blown up the Shadow's biggest city on Z'ha'dum, while jumping into a 2 mile deep chasm, Sheridan has thrown the Shadows into chaos and they have paused in their pursuit of war. Everywhere there is a false sense that the great war is over and the alliance is falling apart as each race withdraws their forces to attend their own wounds.
Delenn and Susan try to rally the alliance into attacking Z'ha'dum while the Shadows are vulnerable and believe there is still a chance to find Sheridan alive.

Now back on Centauri Prime, Londo finds an unwelcome visitor waiting for him - a badly injured Mr. Mordan. Emperor Cartagia has given Mr. Mordan permission to allow the Shadows to station a large fleet of their ships on Centauri Prime and Londo is to handle the arrangements.

G'Kar makes it his personal mission to find Mr. Garibaldi, reported missing when the Shadows unexpectedly pulled out of Babylon 5's vicinity.

Delenn, Susan and Lyta take a single Whitestar ship to Z'ha'dum to look for Sheridan and barely make it out of there alive.

As this episode closes we see Sheridan, apparently still alive deep within Z'ha'dum and a mysterious alien watching over him.

Episode 68:  "Whatever Happened to Mr. Garibaldi?"

The mysterious stranger watching over Sheridan is named," Lorien", he claims to be not one of the first ones but "The" first one of this galaxy. Sheridan is told he is dead, caught in between, and Lorien encourages him to give up his hold on life.

G'Kar puts himself at great risk and leaves Babylon 5 to search for Garibaldi. With the Centauri eager to capture G'Kar and put and end to the last of the Kha'Ri, the ruling body of Narn, G'Kar is quickly caught and finds himself a prisoner of the Centauri Emperor Cartagia.

Learning of Emperor Cartagia's plan to let all of Centauri Prime burn, Londo plots to kill Emperor Cartagia and asks G'Kar to help. G'Kar at last has an opportunity to bargain with Londo and the two make a pact to free Narn when Cartagia is gone.

Lorien finally convinces Sheridan to let go and step into the abyss with the promise he will catch him.

Episode 69:  "The Summoning"

Zack Allan has a tip on the whereabouts of Garibaldi and leads a small squadron of fighters to rescue him. Once back on Babylon 5 it is clear Garibaldi is not the same man he once was.

Susan and Marcus take a Whitestar to search for the first ones to help with Delenn's planned attack on Z'ha'dum. Delenn learns from Lyta that the Vorlons may have their own plans for the Shadows and fears her attack may cross paths with the Vorlons.

During their search, Susan and Marcus come across an anomaly folded within hyperspace and discover and enormous Vorlon fleet on the move.

The League of Non Aligned Worlds plan an open rally to protest Delenn's goal to attack Z'ha'dum. During the rally an unknown ship arrives at Babylon 5 and just as the rally gets hostile, in walks a "resurrected" Sheridan along with Lorien.

Episode 70:  "Falling Toward Apotheosis"

The Vorlons have gone mad. The have decided to take advantage of the "door" opened by Sheridan when he destroyed the Shadow's largest city. Now the Vorlons have brought out their largest ships, "planet killers", and are destroying entire planets influenced by the Shadows. Billions may be killed unless something is done and the first order of business is to get rid of the Vorlon ambassador on Babylon 5.

With Centauri Prime now a target of the Vorlons, Londo must act fast and convinces Emperor Cartagia to hold G'Kar's trial and execution on Narn.

Among the local populations, Sheridan is beginning to be regarded as some kind of Messiah returned from the dead. With his influence Sheridan has now managed to organize the largest fighting fleet in history.

Episode 71:  "The Long Night"

With the Vorlons destroying whole planets in an effort to wipe out those planets touched by the Shadows, the Shadows have now responded by bringing out their heavy guns and are now destroying whole planets which have been touched by the Vorlons.

On Narn, Londo, Vir and G'Kar finally get their chance to assassinate Emperor Cartagia. With Londo now appointed as Prime Minister his first decree is to free Narn and then return home to get rid of the Shadow vessels in the hope it will persuade the Vorlons to leave Centauri Prime alone.

With news of the Vorlons and Shadows movements, Sheridan formulates a plan to bring together the Vorlons, the Shadows and his alliance to force a final confrontation and end the cycles of war instigated by the Shadows.

Episode 72:  "Into the Fire"

Sheridan has sent Lorien with Susan to find all the remaining first ones, meanwhile, the rest of Sheridan's fleet heads for Coriana VI where the Vorlons and Shadows are unknowingly headed right for each other.

On Centauri Prime Londo eliminates the Shadow vessels stationed there and finally gets revenge on Mr. Mordan for all of his manipulations.

Angered by the confrontation Sheridan has forced upon them, the Vorlons hijack Sheridan's mind and the Shadows hijack Delenn's mind and with the help of Lorien a dialogue between them is heard by all. We now hear the Vorlons and the Shadows speak their minds, and Sheridan and Delenn argue an end to the war.

With Lorien, all of the first ones decide to leave the galaxy forever, leaving it in the hands of the younger races. And so starts a third age of mankind.

Episode 73:  "Epiphanies"

The Shadow war is over and all of Babylon 5 celebrates, but now the hard part is ahead of them - maintaining the peace, building upon the destruction and dealing with the Shadow's influence on President Clark.

Fearing Sheridan's growing popularity and power, President Clark wants Babylon 5 shut down and plans to discredit him among his power base, the Alien governments who have been supporting him.

In an uncharacteristic move, Garibaldi decides to resign, leaving the command staff puzzled and disturbed.

On a mission for President Clark, Psi Cop Bester arrives at Babylon 5 with a proposal for Sheridan - take Bester to Z'ha'dum to look for any left over technology and he will tell Sheridan of Clark's plan to discredit Babylon 5. Sheridan takes Bester to Z'ha'dum just as a mass evacuation of the Shadow's allies is underway.

Episode 74:  "The Illusion of Truth"

An ISN team arrives on Babylon 5 to make an in depth story. Known to be a propaganda tool of President Clark, Sheridan at first refuses their request. The reporter convinces Sheridan to change his mind claiming they will make a story anyway and promises him even a little truth is better than none at all. Lennier is given the task of escorting the news team around the station. The news team makes a thorough tour of the station and interviews most of the command staff.

The ISN team finally finishes their work and returns to earth. As Sheridan, Delenn and Susan sit down to watch the report they quickly realize their initial suspicion of ISN was correct. They entire report was twisted to make Babylon 5 look like a place dominated by aliens where humans are treated as second class citizens and Sheridan is made out to be a puppet of alien governments.
Garibaldi begins his new career as a sort of private eye, finding and recovering items and people lost during the war.

Episode 75:  "Atonement"

Delenn is called back to Minbar to participate in a ritual called "the dreaming" and may not be allowed to return to Babylon 5. Back on Minbar, Delenn learns of her clan's objection to her taking a non-Minbari as a prospective mate. She is directed to enter "the dreaming" where the truth about her motives will be revealed. Lennier enters the dreaming with her and the first truth we discover is Delenn's part in the Earth-Minbari War.

Fearing her clan may attribute her decision to become half human and to marry a human to be the result of her guilt over the deaths of so many humans during the Earth-Minbari War, Delenn enters the dreaming again. It is then we learn from Delenn's memory of their greatest leader Dukhat, that she is a descendant of Valen.

Sheridan sends Dr. Franklin and Marcus to Mars to establish contacts within the Mars resistance.

Episode 76:  "Racing Mars"

Garibaldi is becoming more openly hostile towards Sheridan and draws the attention of forces working to oppose Sheridan and his accomplishments. Fed up with Sheridan's growing cult of personality, Garibaldi decides to join forces with people who want Sheridan out of the picture.

Dr. Franklin and Marcus make contact with the Mars resistance and are greeted with suspicion. One of the resistance members turns on Dr. Franklin and Marcus and almost kills them when it is discovered he is being controlled some by kind of alien symbiote. Clearly there are still unknown forces behind the scenes pulling strings.

Cut off from Earth commerce, Susan is forced to do business with the black market in an effort to keep Babylon 5 supplied.

Episode 77:  "Lines of Communication"

In response to the propaganda war President Clark has mounted against Sheridan and Babylon 5, Sheridan decides to turn the war room into the "Voice of the Resistance" to broadcast their side of the story and provide an alternative source for news.

Some of the neighboring planets to Minbar have been attacked by unknown forces and the warrior caste on Minbar refuses to get involved. Delenn is asked to help and takes a fleet of Whitestars to investigate. She soon finds out there is a new enemy called the Drakh and some of the Minbari have allied themselves with them. It is clear to Delenn the Drakh were the servants of the Shadows and she soon engages them in battle.
Delenn now realizes the Minbari people are divided and her world's social order is in peril.

Back on Mars, Franklin and Marcus try to convince the resistance that Sheridan is on their side and promises support.

Episode 78:  "Conflicts of Interest"

Garibaldi is hired by a man named Wade who gives him a job that will require him to break station security regulations, a test to see if Garibaldi is sincere about his break with Sheridan. He learns the man he is working for is William Edgars, one of the richest men on Mars and owner of a medical research facility.

Susan makes a trip down to Epsilon 3 to ask for a power source to broadcast her "Voice of the Resistance" program.

With the Shadow war over, Sheridan wants to use the Whitestar fleet as a peacekeeping force to patrol the borders of the Non Aligned worlds but he needs the cooperation of the League. He finds it is harder to organize an alliance for peace than it is to organize an alliance against a common enemy. His first task is to get G'Kar and Londo to come together for the first time in the interest of peace.

Episode 79:  "Rumors, Bargains and Lies"

As Delenn heads to Minbar, news is received that civil war has broken out. Prior to arriving on Minbar she rendezvous with Neroon of the warrior caste and pleads with him to help her with a plan to restore peace. Fear and distrust between the warrior and religious caste aboard ship results in sabotage and jeopardizes the mission. Lennier intervenes and is almost killed in the process.

Unable to get the League of Non-Aligned Worlds to come together in peace, Sheridan devises a strategy that has the Whitestars firing at asteroids for no apparent reason. These activities galvanizes the League of Non-Aligned Worlds into joining with Sheridan out of fear they are being left out of important matters.

Episode 80:  "Moments of Transition"

Back on Minbar, Delenn as representative of the religious caste surrenders to the warrior caste and ends the civil war. The warrior caste now plans on becoming the dominant ruling body on Minbar, but there is one last ceremony to be performed. With the Grey Council dissolved, the new ruling caste is to be chosen according to the ancient ways - through the test of the Star Fire Wheel. Delenn as leader of the religious caste and Shakiri as leader of the warrior caste are to step into the Star Fire Wheel and prove their worthiness by sacrificing themselves.

Now that Lyta no longer works for the Vorlons she has no means of support and no one will hire her since she is a Psi Corp rogue. Bester arrives on Babylon 5 and makes her an offer to return to the Psi Corp. With no other alternatives, Lyta reluctantly rejoins Psi Corp.

President Clark's war with the resistant escalates and he orders the destruction of transports carry ten thousand civilians trying to escape the battle zone. In response Sheridan vows to confront Clark's aggressions head-on.

Episode 81:  "No Surrender, No Retreat"

To stop President Clark's tyrannical grip on those earth colonies trying to break free of his oppression, Sheridan plans to take the Whitestar fleet first to liberate the colony world Proxima 3, then to the Mars colony and finally to Earth itself. Once again Sheridan is taking his people into battle against their own kind. Sheridan asks the League of Non-Aligned Worlds to support him in his decision to go up against Earth and G'Kar and Londo are among the first to agree.

Proxima 3 is liberated rather easily as Sheridan finds some of the commanders of the Earth destroyers refuse to fight for Clark and choose instead to defect.

Londo approaches G'Kar in an attempt to heal old wounds and finds G'Kar is still rather unforgiving.

Garibaldi leaves Babylon 5 and heads to Mars to meet his new employer.

Episode 82:  "The Exercise of Vital Powers"

Garibaldi arrives on Mars and meets his employer William Edgars. He soon finds he is getting involved in high stakes political games that could result in the end of Sheridan's campaign, but Garibaldi believes Sheridan is becoming too powerful for his own good and needs to be stopped.

Before Edgars will tell Garibaldi his plans he has one more test of Garibaldi's commitment to oppose Sheridan - provide information that will lead to the capture of Sheridan and to personally set him up.

Sheridan instructs Dr. Franklin to return to working on the telepaths in cryostasis and insists he needs them awake and mobile soon for a secret mission.

This episode guest stars Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as William Edgars.

Episode 83:  "The Face of the Enemy"

Dr. Franklin and Lyta arrive on Mars with their cargo of telepaths in cryostasis for Sheridan's secret mission.

Garibaldi sets in motion his plan to capture Sheridan and turn him over to Clark's forces. Garibaldi allows Sheridan's father to be captured by Earth Force and uses him as bait. Sheridan agrees to meet with Garibaldi and orders Susan to replace him as commander of the fleet until he returns.

With Sheridan finally captured and in Clark's custody, William Edgars tells Garibaldi the rest of his plans. Edgars sees President Clark as a trivial matter, but regards the telepaths Clark put in power as the real threat. Edgars pharmaceutical company has created a virus that infects only telepaths and is to be used to control them.

Now that Garibaldi knows Edgars plans, he triggers a transmitter hidden in his tooth and soon we find Garibaldi meeting with Psi Cop Bester. We now discover why Garibaldi has not been himself lately - he has been an unknowing agent of Bester, the result of deep mind conditioning by the Psi Corp. When Bester learns of Egars plans for his telepaths he quickly has Edgars killed.

With Sheridan in custody and Garibaldi branded a traitor, Susan is more resolved to finish what Sheridan has started.

Episode 84:  "Intersections in Real Time"

With Sheridan captured, Clark has him subjected to torture, deprivation and mind conditioning in an effort to break his will power, turn him and then use him as a defeated, broken propaganda tool. Throughout this entire episode we see Sheridan as a prisoner of war as his limits as a soldier are tested. His captors are portrayed as weak-willed weasels, puppets to whomever is in power with no real convictions or sense of morals of their own. A lesson on the perils of supporting the powers that be just because they are in power - after all it is always easier to go with the flow than against it.

Episode 85:  "Between the Darkness and the Light"

As this episode begins it appears Sheridan has escaped and is back at Babylon 5 with Dr. Franklin. In reality, Sheridan is still under the control of President Clark's torturers but is at his breaking point.

Now that Garibaldi knows he was under the influence of Bester's mind alterations, he contacts the Mars resistance in an attempt to return to Sheridan's people. The resistance refuses to believe his story, as he is about to be killed he begs Lyta to probe his mind to prove his story. Garibaldi has information on where Sheridan is being kept on Mars and together with Dr. Franklin and Lyta they attempt a rescue operation.

In an uncharacteristic move, Londo and G'Kar rally the League of Non-Aligned Worlds into providing warships to Ivanova's fleet and to fight side by side with the humans in their battle to take back Earth. Susan's whitestar fleet is nearing Mars and she learns President Clark has an advanced destroyer fleet waiting for them. The new destroyer design is clearly adapted Shadow technology and Susan is determined to destroy every last one of them. Clark's advanced fleet is destroyed but Susan is mortally wounded in the battle.

Back on Mars, Garibaldi, Dr. Franklin and Lyta rescue Sheridan.

Episode 86:  "Endgame"

Now that Susan has cleared the way by destroying Clark's advanced fleet, Sheridan can begin his final assault to free Earth. We now learn of Sheridan's secret weapon, he will use the telepaths suspended in cryostasis to disable Clark's remaining destroyers at Mars. Altered by the Shadows to be used as living CPU's in their Shadow vessels, the telepaths upon waking immediately merge with any nearby computer system. By smuggling them aboard Clark's fleet during re-supply stops, they will be awakened by a telepathic signal delivered by Lyta.

With a large number of Clark's fleet disabled at Mars, Sheridan jumps to Earth space for the final battle. Defeated and desperate, Clark has one last move to make - called "scorched earth" he turns the planetary defense grid toward Earth. With the help of Delenn and warships contributed by the League of Non-Aligned Worlds, they have only a matter of minutes to destroy the planetary defense grid.

Marcus bows out of the final battle to take desperate measures to save Susan's life.

Episode 87:  "Rising Star"

With his forces defeated, President Clark took his own life rather than stand charges for his actions. Sheridan's return to Earth is received by the population and the government as a mixed blessing - half of the people think he is a hero, the other half think he should be executed. They compromise and instead request that Sheridan resign from Earth Force for having led an insurrection against his own government.

Back on Babylon 5, Marcus has used an alien healing device that takes the life energy from one person and gives it to another, Susan will live but Marcus has sacrificed himself.

On Mars, Garibaldi rescues Lise Hampton, William Edgars wife, from the Mars Mafia where she has been a captive since the murder of Edgars by the Psi Corps..

Meanwhile, Delenn has been busy with plans for a new alliance. The League of Non-Aligned Worlds is to be dissolved in favor of a newly formed Interstellar Alliance with John Sheridan as its President.

Episode 88:  "The Deconstruction of Falling Stars"

Sheridan and Delenn return to Babylon 5 to a heroes welcome and a celebration of their marriage. It is soon apparent these scenes are recordings being accessed by someone in the far future. This entire episode is seen through the perspective of someone a million years in the future as records are viewed at time intervals of two weeks, 100 years, 500 years, 1,000 years and finally 1,000,000 years from the formation of the Interstellar Alliance. Here we get a historical view of the legacy left behind by Sheridan, Delenn and Babylon 5. As is typical of human nature, Sheridan and Delenn's contribution to the shape of the future is taken with skepticism and as time progresses so to does their legend diminish.
  • At two weeks from the formation of the Interstellar Alliance we watch a news report as a group of so-called panel of experts discuss the political changes thrust upon Earth by Sheridan's interference. As is typical of most news reports, the tone is negative and inflammatory and aimed primarily at obtaining favorable ratings.
  • 100 years later we watch again a news panel, this time discussing the 100th anniversary of The Interstellar Alliance. True to a news program it is once again mostly negative and inflammatory, but this time the program is interrupted by an unexpected visit by an aging Delenn. She has a select few words to say to them that puts them in their place.
  • At 500 years later we witness a holographic simulation of the command staff of Babylon 5, re-created and imbued with their known personality traits. The purpose of the simulation is to "deconstruct" them as revered historical figures, in short to lie, to create a false history to support a political view that opposes the Interstellar Alliance. The experiment backfires due to the reconstruction of the personalities being a little too accurate.
  • At 1,000 years into the future the Earth is going through another Dark Age. The aftermath of what is called "The Great Burn", a global holocaust. And who has become the keepers of the ancient knowledge?, the Rangers, preserving knowledge of the past for another Restoration.
  • At 1,000,000 years into the future our Sun is dying and the population of Earth has evacuated to New Earth. All historical records have been preserved and transferred to New Earth. We witness the last human figure on Earth as he transfers his essence into an encounter suit.
As the episode ends we are back at Babylon 5, with Sheridan and Delenn speculating on how they will be remembered in the future.
